ed about their academic well-being, Read our tips below to find out what you can do at home to ensure your child stays at ahead of the class!

  1. Alphabet & Sounds

Alphabet and sounds are a precursor to reading and writing. Children in kindergarten through second grade should practice both at least three to five times weekly. Be sure to expose children to more complex spellings and sounds as they show mastery. This will help them develop their reading and writing skills.

  2. Numbers

Teaching your kids to count, identify, and manipulate numbers from 0 to 100 will greatly impact their math performance. It will also help them learn other math skills such as addition and subtraction.

  3. Handwriting

Children should be taught how to form letters and numbers properly. For starters, they should know how and when to write uppercase and lowercase letters when writing their name and the months of the year. When forming sentences, students should able to write legibly and properly in regards to capitalization, spacing, punctuation, and grade-level spelling

  4. Comprehension:

Asking students to identify story elements is a great way to assess and build their understanding of a story. Pairing these questions with higher-order thinking questions such as why, how, and what if will help students exercise their thinking and delve deeper into the story.

  5. Breaks

Students spend a great deal of time in school so it is important not to overload or overwhelm them with an excessive amount of work when they are home. For this reason, you'll want to keep learning sessions under 45 minutes for younger students and under for older students. If more time is needed, it is important that you incorporate 10-15 minute mental breaks so that students stay engaged, and focused, and obtain overall better results.

  6. Speak Positively

Learning can be a difficult process. Hence, parents must understand that students won't always answer questions right, and learning a new concept may take longer than imagined. Still, parents must remain calm and speak positively when helping children with homework. Doing so will not only encourage the child but build his confidence and stamina for learning. Becoming upset and losing your temper can have long-lasting negative effects on the child's growth and development that may hinder his academic performance.

  7. Communicate with Teachers

Establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with teachers will allow teachers and parents to work together to educate their children in the best way possible. Parents should maintain communication with their children's teachers to stay abreast of any changes or improvements in behavior or academic performance and to discover additional strategies for helping their children at home.
